SINGAPORE, Feb 14 (Reuters) - Gold prices were steady on
Monday, as investors in a market with no clear direction watch
the development of protests in Yemen after Egypt's mass
uprising.
FUNDAMENTALS
* Spot gold was little changed at $1,355.15 an ounce
by 0031 GMT.
* U.S. gold futures edged down 0.3 percent to
$1,355.8.
* Following Egypt's mass protest that ousted president Hosni
Mubarak, hundreds of anti-government protesters in Yemen clashed
with police blocking them from marching to the country's
presidential palace on Sunday.
* Egypt's new military rulers dissolved parliament and
suspended the constitution on Sunday but said they would govern
only until elections to replace ousted president Hosni Mubarak,
possibly in six months.
* Political turmoil in the Middle East may provide a floor
for gold prices, but traders said prices were likely to be
rangebound as the market lacks a clear direction.
* The euro teetered precariously on a key technical level
against the dollar early on Monday, while the dollar index edged
up to a three-week high.
* Japan's economy shrank slightly in the final quarter of
last year, hurt by an expiry of government incentives for car
purchases, although analysts expect a recovery this year on firm
exports to fast-growing Asia.
MARKET NEWS
* U.S. stocks closed out their second straight week of gains
on Friday with a rally sparked after Egyptian President Hosni
Mubarak resigned, easing tension around the region for now.
