The centre-right parties' candidate for Bratislava district lost in Saturday's regional election to an independent candidate backed by the leftist opposition party SMER of ex-Prime Minister Robert Fico. The centre-right dominated Bratislava since country's independence in 1993.

SMER SCORES IN REGIONAL ELECTION
The leftist SMER party of Robert Fico scored well in Saturday's regional election winning more mayor, deputies seats in towns and villages then four years ago - The ruling coalition of Prime Minister Iveta Radicova lost some its traditional 'strongholds'.
Smer, however, lost some of 'its' constituencies to centre-right candidates.
