Mihalovits was just about to retire when the crisis hit. He

MORTGAGE AID
The government is expected to present a mechanism under
which the state will help cover mortgages for Slovaks who will
lose job due to the crisis and risk losing their homes as well.
Commercial banks are also expected to cooperate in restructuring
such mortgages.

ARMY CUTS COSTS
The defence ministry is expected to lay off hundreds of
employees, including professional soldiers and civilian staff,
this year to cut expenditure. The ministry seeks cost-savings
worth hundreds of millions of euros in 2009.

SAMSUNG KEEPS WORKERS
Samsung Electronics <005930.KS> said it would not cut jobs
at its Slovak plant for now. The assembly plant, manufacturing
TV-sets, employs 3,000 workers and some 1,000 leased
contractors.

The state will increase guarantees for business loans up to
1 million euro ($1.28 million) from current 332,000 euros, Prime
Minister Robert Fico said.
