SINGAPORE, Jan 3 (Reuters) - Spot gold edged lower on
Monday, after finishing 2010 with a near 30 percent gain,
pressured by a rebound in the dollar, while silver retreated
from a 30-year high hit earlier in the day.
FUNDAMENTALS
* Spot gold inched down 0.3 percent to $1,414.90 an
ounce by 0019 GMT, retreating from a three-week high of
$1,421.15 hit on Dec 31.
* U.S. gold futures lost 0.4 percent to $1,416.1.
* The dollar was a touch firmer on Monday, after ending a
volatile 2010 a bit higher, with investors gearing up for
gains in early 2011 on expectations the U.S. economic recovery
was gaining momentum.
* Spot silver touched a 30-year high of $30.93 an
ounce earlier, but eased to $30.67.
* Holdings in the world's largest silver-backed
exchange-traded fund, iShares Silver Trust , rose for the
first time since Dec 17 to 10,921.57 tonnes by Dec 31 from
10,903.34 tonnes.
* Spot platinum rose to $1,775 an ounce, its
highest since Nov. 10, before easing to $1,769.74.
MARKET NEWS
* U.S. stocks closed out a year of double-digit gains and
the S&P's best December since 1991 with a quiet and little
changed session on Friday as investors found no reason to make
big bets ahead of the new year.
