PRECIOUS-Gold hovers above $1,060/oz, dollar eyed

                                
 TOKYO, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Spot gold hovered above $1,060 an
ounce on Friday, after rising in the past two sessions, with
investors focusing on whether the dollar will weaken further.
                                
 FUNDAMENTALS
                                
 * Gold <XAU=> edged up to $1,061.30 an ounce by 0008 GMT, up
0.1 percent from New York's notional close of $1,060.00. [GOL/]
                                
 * Bullion hit a record high of $1,070.40 last week.
                                
 * U.S. gold futures for December delivery <GCZ9> were at
$1,062.10 an ounce, up 0.3 percent, after falling $5.90 to
$1,058.60 on Thursday.
                                
 * Holdings of the SPDR Gold Trust <GLD>, the world's largest
gold-backed exchange-traded fund, stood at 1,108.094 tonnes as of
Oct. 22, unchanged from the previous business day. [GOL/SPDR]
                                
 MARKET NEWS
                                
 * The dollar surrendered slim gains on Friday, resuming its
fall towards 14-month lows against a basket of currencies on
expectations interest rates wil remain low in the United States.
[USD/] Weakness in the greenback has increased investor interest
in the precious metal as an alternative to the U.S. currency.
                                
 * The euro rose above $1.5047 <EUR=> for the first time in 14
months.
                                
 * U.S. stocks rose on Thursday after quarterly results from
insurer Travelers and regional bank PNC Financial gave a boost to

 * Oil prices fell from a one-year high on Thursday as a rise
in new U.S. jobless claims sent investors seeking safer havens.
